I am getting ready to redo maple flooring and had some questions about the proper steps.  I remember reading somewhere that it is best to do the first coat with a 50/50 mix of thinner and semi-gloss polyurethane allowing the first coat to cure and setup better.  It then suggested as many as 3 coats after with the final coat being the desired finish.  I prefer to have a satin finish which would require 1 coat of 50/50, 2 coats of semi and the final coat of satin.  Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks.

Hi Michael,

It sounds to me like you know what you are doing. Are you going to use oil or water based polyurethane on your floors?

hello...question...have you sanded the floors? If not...have you considered oscillating floor sanders as opposed to drum type sanders ? I have done extensive floor refinishing...and unless you have much experience with the drum sander...I would advise you to seriously consider using the large oscillating type sander...as it is far less likely to do damage associated with drum sanders. The oscillating sander...also can get very close to the edges along walls...virtually eliminating the disk type edge sander...however...caution should be excersized around doorways and doorcasings...as the vibration of oscillating sanders can do some damage to woodwork...although it is much more frogiving than some of the pitfalls associated with both the drum and edger sanders.    Good Luck
